September OwlCrate Unboxing

September OwlCrate

I have heard so many good things about the OwlCrate (a monthly subscription box for YA lovers), but always debated whether to actually subscribe or just jealously watch unboxing videos on YouTube. Well in June I had finally decided to subscribe, sadly on to the waitlist. I was not quite sure if I will ever get to receive the box itself. And suddenly it is here. Somewhere around the end of summer vacation I noticed on Instagram that there are spots available for the September box, and I got a spot. So September 20th I got a confirming email that my box has been shipped out. I could not have been happier, but I knew that I would have to contain that excitement for some time because the country I live in is in the middle of nowhere, and by nowhere I mean Europe. So that is why I am doing the unboxing only now, like ten days after the boxes were send. I was actually nicely surprised how fast it came; I was not expecting the box for another week or so. No more talking let’s dive into the box, shall we?

First up just look at the box, how gorgeous it is. Maybe you guys do not understand but I have seen this book in literally hundreds of videos but actually holding the box is a very different and very special feeling, at least for the obsessive book lovers like me.

Every month there is a different theme to the box and this month it was all about LEADING LADIES. Could not be happier about the theme of my first box.

First thing out of the box is a tote bag, and not just any tote bag, a dauntless tote bag representing Tris (from Divergent series by Veronica Roth) in the collection of leading ladies. Personally I started disliking Tris as the series went on, but I still think she has a rightful spot on the list. And I love totes, perfect for bringing home more books to read, totes are my constant companion on my travels to the local library. And you need to be at least little dauntless in your life. And the author of the lovely tote bag is Whoviandrea, I would seriously suggest you checking out the store yourselves to see some other awesome merch.

Next out is a Pop Vinyl type key chain of Daenerys Targaryen (from the Song of Ice and Fire series by George R. R. Martin) and it is so pretty. I always adored the Pop Vinyl figures but never got to obtaining one. So now I got one and not just any one, one of a kickass as Daenerys. I have not actually got around to reading the books and I do not want to watch the show till I read the books, but I have watched several videos and read some book reviews to know enough to love Daenerys. Like who would not love someone who has their own dragons. I want to have a dragon now, but I will settle for the awesome keychain by Funko.

Now there is tones of confetti type thing, I know what I will play with for the rest of the night. Oh the mess I will cause with these things. I cannot wait. No I am not five years old, I promise, but I do love playing like a five year old sometimes. Maybe that is why I work with kids, cause the job requires me to play, and no I am not a pedophile. I swear. OK got a bit sidetracked. Let’s get back to the box.

The next thing is a photo of none other than Hermione Granger, (of the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling) not just one picture but two. As nearly every girl my age I loved growing up with Hermione, she is witty and she is smart, something that certain people forget that girls can actually be like that. So I am very thankful that there was such a character in my life when I was growing up. The OwlCrate card says that the photo will last for the next 200 years, but personally I do not think I will be around to check, anyways the artwork comes from one and only Megan Lara. The other postcard is a commercial for a MeowBox for your lovely cats. Well now I wish I had a cat. Basically after this article I will have to go get myself a dragon and a cat, guess which one will be easier to find.

The last goodie thing in the box is a paper bag, no I am kidding we did not get just a paper bag. Once opened the bag reveals a kickass necklace with an arrow on it. I think it represents Katniss, (from Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins) we all know how much she values her bow and arrows. Like Tris, Katniss is one of those characters that I absolutely adored when getting into the series but started to despise her at the end, I guess I am not good with character development. I usually like the characters at the beginning but not so much at the end. Nevertheless, the necklace looks cute and I am sure I will find an outfit to wear it with. The necklace was designed and made by the lovely Crystal Compass.

And finally the book, Dumplin’ by Julie Murphy (author of Side Effects May Vary) I have to be completely honest with you guys and admit that I have not heard of this book before opening the box, but that does not lessen my excitement for getting to read it. Let me just put here the description from GoodReads:

Self-proclaimed fat girl Willowdean Dickson (dubbed “Dumplin’” by her former beauty queen mom) has always been at home in her own skin. Her thoughts on having the ultimate bikini body? Put a bikini on your body. With her all-American beauty best friend, Ellen, by her side, things have always worked…until Will takes a job at Harpy’s, the local fast-food joint. There she meets Private School Bo, a hot former jock. Will isn’t surprised to find herself attracted to Bo. But she is surprised when he seems to like her back. Instead of finding new heights of self-assurance in her relationship with Bo, Will starts to doubt herself. So she sets out to take back her confidence by doing the most horrifying thing she can imagine: entering the Miss Clover City beauty pageant—along with several other unlikely candidates—to show the world that she deserves to be up there as much as any twiggy girl does. Along the way, she’ll shock the hell out of Clover City—and maybe herself most of all. With starry Texas nights, red candy suckers, Dolly Parton songs, and a wildly unforgettable heroine—Dumplin’ is guaranteed to steal your heart.

If that does not sell you the book I do not know what would. All I know is that I am super excited to dive in to the world of Willowdean and see what happens next. With the book there was a super cool sticker saying: “If you got it, flaunt it” and it reminds me of the scene in The Producers when Uma Thurman sings “When you got it, flaunt it”, I love that movie, I have to watch it soon. And the last thing in the pack is a letter from Julie Murphy herself, which I find super cute. Like I know she wrote one and then copied it to put it in all the boxes but even then I think it is super cool. She thanks the readers for reading her book, and that according to me is pretty awesome.

Well that is it for the September OwlCrate box and I could not be happier with it. I got super cool goodies, that I can actually use every day, I am definitely putting Daenerys on my keys and taking the Dauntless tote for my next trip to the library so I for sure will be using those goodies. And the book looks super funny and just fluffy. I feel like it is one of those books that will simply warm my heart and I cannot wait for it to happen. Let me finish this guys off with a quote from the book. “There’s something about swimsuits that make you think you’ve got to EARN the right to wear them. Really, the CRITERIA is simple. Do you have a BODY? Put a SWIMSUIT on it.”
